TDEE Calculator Methodology
This page documents how TDEECalculator.tools converts the information you enter into estimates for basal metabolic rate, Total Daily Energy Expenditure, activity-adjusted calories, calorie targets, BMI, ideal weight references, and macronutrients. It also explains the assumptions and limitations behind those calculations.
How TDEECalculator.tools Calculates TDEE
The calculator uses a two-stage process. First, it estimates Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. It then multiplies that BMR estimate by the activity factor selected in the calculator.
Core calculation
Estimated TDEE = Rounded BMR × Activity Factor
BMR is rounded to the nearest whole calorie before the selected activity factor is applied. The resulting TDEE is then rounded again.
Step 1: Standardize the Measurements
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation uses kilograms and centimeters. Imperial measurements are converted before the BMR equation is applied.
Weight conversion

centimeters = inches × 2.54
Step 2: Estimate Basal Metabolic Rate
The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. The original study derived a resting-energy prediction equation from measurements in 498 healthy adults, using weight, height, age, and sex as predictors.
Male equation
BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5
Female equation
BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161
Here, W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimeters, and A is age in years.
Step 3: Apply the Selected Activity Factor
After BMR is calculated and rounded, the calculator applies one of the following fixed activity factors.

Step 4: Calculate Daily and Weekly Energy Expenditure
TDEE is the rounded BMR multiplied by the selected activity factor and rounded to the nearest whole calorie. Weekly expenditure is daily TDEE multiplied by seven.
Weekly calories = rounded daily TDEE × 7
Why We Use the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
Mifflin-St Jeor is a published predictive equation designed to estimate resting energy expenditure from measurements that most people know. The original 1990 study measured resting expenditure by indirect calorimetry in 498 healthy adults, including men and women.
A predictive equation is not a direct metabolic measurement. It is a practical estimate, which is why this site describes its outputs as estimated calorie needs rather than exact calorie burn.

How to Choose an Activity Level
Activity level is one of the largest judgment calls in a simple TDEE calculation. The factors are fixed, while real daily movement varies from person to person. Two people who both train four days per week can still have very different total activity if one sits most of the day and the other performs physical work.
Choose the option that best represents your overall routine, including exercise, work activity, walking, standing, and other regular movement. Do not choose a higher category only because one or two workouts feel difficult.
Common Activity-Level Mistakes
- Counting gym sessions while ignoring how active or sedentary the rest of the day is.
- Selecting “Athlete” because workouts are intense even when total training volume is much lower.
- Treating an activity factor as a precise measurement rather than a broad estimate.
- Keeping the same activity category after a major change in work, training, or daily movement.
The NIH Body Weight Planner also uses physical activity as an input when estimating calorie needs, although it uses its own modeling approach and should not be expected to match this calculator exactly.
How Calorie Targets Are Calculated
The results page derives five simple calorie targets from estimated TDEE. These are arithmetic adjustments to the estimate, not individualized medical or dietary prescriptions.

Important limitation: the 250- and 500-calorie adjustments are fixed software presets. The 1,200-calorie floor is also a software rule in the current calculator. These values do not account for medical history, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medications, eating disorders, growth, athletic demands, or other individual factors.
How Macronutrient Estimates Are Calculated
Macro targets are derived from the calorie target selected on the results page. Protein and carbohydrate use 4 calories per gram and fat uses 9 calories per gram. Each result is rounded to the nearest whole gram.

These are fixed percentage presets, not personalized assessments of individual protein, fat, or carbohydrate requirements.
How BMI Is Calculated
BMI is calculated separately from TDEE. Weight is converted to kilograms and height to meters when needed, then the standard metric equation is used.
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²
The code classifies values below 18.5 as Underweight, 18.5 to below 25 as Normal Weight, 25 to below 30 as Overweight, and 30 or above as Obese. Those numeric cutoffs align with standard adult BMI category thresholds, although the CDC currently uses the term “Healthy Weight” instead of “Normal Weight.”
BMI is a screening measure based on height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat or muscle mass.
How Ideal Weight References Are Calculated
Four traditional ideal-body-weight formulas are calculated separately from TDEE. They do not change BMR, TDEE, calorie targets, or macro results.

In the current calculation library, these ideal-weight outputs are produced in pounds. For heights below five feet, the implementation uses zero inches above five feet rather than subtracting weight.
Worked TDEE Calculation Example
Consider a fictional 35-year-old man who weighs 180 pounds, is 5 feet 10 inches tall, and selects Moderate Exercise.
1. Convert weight
180 × 0.45359237 = 81.6466 kg
2. Convert height
70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm
3. Calculate and round BMR
(10 × 81.6466) + (6.25 × 177.8) − (5 × 35) + 5 ≈ 1,757.7
Rounded BMR = 1,758 calories/day
4. Apply Moderate Exercise
1,758 × 1.55 = 2,724.9
Rounded TDEE = 2,725 calories/day
5. Calculate weekly expenditure
2,725 × 7 = 19,075 calories/week
This example demonstrates the calculator's arithmetic. It does not mean that every real person with those measurements expends exactly 2,725 calories each day.
Accuracy and Limitations
The calculator is a prediction tool. It does not directly measure resting metabolism, exercise expenditure, non-exercise movement, or total daily energy expenditure. Its outputs inherit uncertainty from both the BMR equation and the activity category selected.
Predictive Equation vs. Direct Measurement
The original Mifflin-St Jeor research measured resting energy expenditure with indirect calorimetry and then derived a prediction equation. This website uses the resulting equation; it does not perform calorimetry.
Activity Factors Are Broad Approximations
A fixed multiplier cannot capture every difference in occupation, steps, training volume, exercise intensity, spontaneous movement, or day-to-day routine. Activity selection should be treated as an informed estimate.
Why Two Calculators Can Give Different Results
Other tools may use a different resting-energy equation, different activity factors, different unit conversions, or a different rounding sequence. Those implementation choices can produce different answers from the same inputs.
Rounding Can Change the Final Number Slightly
TDEECalculator.tools rounds BMR before applying the activity factor and then rounds TDEE again. A calculator that keeps full precision until the final step can differ by a few calories.
How to Use the Estimate in the Real World
A TDEE estimate is most useful as a starting hypothesis. If calorie intake is tracked consistently and your longer-term body-weight trend differs from what the estimate suggests, that real-world trend provides useful feedback about whether the starting estimate may be too high or too low.
Short-term scale changes can reflect water and food mass, so one weigh-in should not be treated as proof that an estimate is right or wrong.
When to Recalculate Your TDEE
Recalculate when the inputs or activity estimate change meaningfully, such as after a substantial change in body weight, moving between sedentary and physical work, or beginning or ending a high-volume training routine.
You do not need to recalculate because of ordinary day-to-day fluctuations. Update the estimate when your usual inputs no longer represent your current routine.
